Policies and Procedures

Dress Code:

We’re breaking the rules: Students of all ages should wear something that feels comfortable moving in. End of story.

(In all seriousness, most students wear breathable fabrics that stretch. Jeans not recommended - unless they’re “jeggings” ha)

Shoe Recommendations:

Contemporary & Modern: Barefoot and/or Comfy Socks (beware of slip-factor for traveling steps)

Ballet: Barefoot, Socks, or nude ballet shoes

Hip-Hop, Zumba, Strech/Sculpt: Sneaks/Kicks

Ballroom: Heels recommended for women, Dress shoes recommended for men

Yoga, Pilates, Conditioning: Barefoot

Refund Policy:

It is not our intention to force feed anyone dance. You don’t LOVE it, we’ll refund you 100% for all of the classes you haven’t taken, whether you purchased a class card or a session-enroll class. No questions. (but we think you’ll LOVE it)

Returned Check Policy:

We know once in a while it may happen.  If your check comes back insufficient funds, we tack on a $25 fee to your account.  We don’t like to play bad guy, but our bank charges us and we’re on a shoestring budget! :)

Billing Procedure:

If you are a session-enroll student and do not pay in full up front, bills are mailed on the first of every month.  Bills are due on Day #20 of every month. If you prefer e-bills or auto-cc, just let us know. Go green!

Late Fees:

If bills are not paid by the 20th of the month, we charge a $15 late fee to the account for each month in arrears. Again, we’re not trying to be mean... just pay the lights and we appreciate your timeliness.

Class Cancellation Policy:

If Urbanity Dance cancels one of their session enrolls we will either add a make-up class at the end of the series or work directly with the class to either start earlier or end later for the remaining class sessions.

Make-up Policy:

Due to our unique and personal class offerings, we do not have sections of the same class.  However, we want to treat you right- here’s what we’ve come up with:

If a student misses a class, the student is allowed one make-up class up in a future session.  Session-enroll adult students are allowed one make-up in any open fitness/dance class that they choose.

Code of Conduct:

If you like Urbanity, please be an ambassador in your community. If you hate us, well tell us what you hate and we’ll try to help.

Oh yeah, and try to be a peach when you can :)

Studio Etiquette:

We’re a little South End gem, and there is a lot of traffic coming in and out of our space.

Once a student enters the door, please remove your shoes and walk along the back of the classroom to the dressing room area. We understand that classes may overlap a bit, but we appreciate your stealthy skills and whispering compassion for the other students trying to get their rumba-on.

Health & Safety Policies:

The safety of our students is our #1 priority. If a student has a medical concern, please be honest on your registration form.  Medical information is kept private - but it is important that the teacher is aware of any important medical history that will help us better serve you, and also act responsibly in the event of an emergency.

Inclement Weather Procedures:

For students under 18, in the event of inclement weather or other emergency, students will be supervised by Urbanity professionals until it is safe to pick up your children. The safety of our students in our #1 concern and our faculty are trained in how to best respond to emergencies.

FAQ:

I’m scared to dance! What if I can’t keep up?

Urbanity is built upon a theory of inside-out dancing, and teachers foster a welcoming, open, learning environment. Half the battle is getting through the door - and like anything, it gets easier after a few classes... It’s a personal journey, and Urbanity teachers ask our students to turn off the inner-critic and enjoy the pure act of dancing, creating and expressing through movement.

FAQ: What payment method do you accept?

All major credit cards, checks made payable to Urbanity Dance, and cash

FAQ: Can students enroll after the class has begun?

Enrollment is first come, first serve - registrations will be accepted as long as there is space available and the teacher feels that the student can keep up with the syllabus.

FAQ: Why do some classes require a session-enroll commitment?

The vast majority of our Adult classes are drop-in open enrollment & no pre-registration is required. The session-enroll format provides a solid foundation; the students build weekly on a syllabus, developing technique, vocabulary, and artistry with a consistent teacher and peers. To register for a semester enroll class, email Audrey at studio@urbanitydance.org.

FAQ: Do you have a dressing room?

We are working on adding a dressing room. Right now students may change in the bathroom.

FAQ: Do I need to pre-register?

The majority of our adult classes are on a drop-in basis. No pre-registration required. The only adult courses which require pre-registration for adults are 1.) Monday Ballroom and 2.) Intro to Contemporary on Tues/Thurs.

Any other class just drop on in! We encourage new students to come 5 minutes early to fill out a New Student Reg Form.

All classes for teens and children require pre-registration. Learn more.

FAQ: Do parents participate in the children’s classes?

Whereas parents/guardians are required to participate in Sprouts I (Ages 2-3), students are on their own for Sprouts II (Ages 3-4). While sometimes students are ready at age 3, we realize that levels of independence do not directly reflect the age number. We encourage parents to determine the course which will best support development. Our gem of a studio does not have a reception area, so parents are welcome to observe or visit one of the lovely coffee shops in the neighborhood :)
